Keep going with those scraps. Sew strips together then cut 2 1/2" strips on the bias to make your binding.
I too think this is a great idea, I love the scappy binding, its a pain but well worth the effort!

Well its almost done and I've got a box of pink scraps left over bigger than when I started? So I'm gonna make a second quilt top as soon as I finish piecing this one. I've already decided the pattern and will use the bolt of white on white. I'll post them both when quilted.

Make sure all of ya'll on fabric "diets" check out your local Freecycle. I have gotten yards upon yards of fabric from people getting rid of it.

Still haven't figured out why the would be getting rid of fabric.

Yep, I know what you mean!! Seems like I always have to go and buy borders or backing or white!! Buying a bolt sound good to me.....good idea.

I've been making a quilt for my DGD. It all started with the pinwheel project last year. I had my backing all picked out and then changed my mind how I was going to put the pinwheels together. After I got the top done, the backing I'd picked didn't go good with it. I went thru my stash and of course, what I found that went well with it....didn't have enough. I'm like you....I had to go out and buy a new backing for it.  Frustrating, isn't it?
