Default Vacation in Canada...Any quilt shops close?

    Hi everyone
We will be leaving for a bit of a camping trip. My husband always goes with my sons but now I have finally got my passport so I'm heading up. We will be in the area of Mosquito Lake and Westport. We will be traveling North on Rt. 81 from Pa. I found a shop in Syracuse, NY but that is about it. Do you know of anything in and around the area we will be traveling or vacationing? I would appreciate any help. Thanks
    Debbie

I think we need more info. Which province will you be visiting?

Okay, did a google search and it looks like you really will be out in the boonies. The only big cities are either the Soo or Sudbury. I'm sure there are quilt stores in both those cities but you are not heading into a very populated area and maybe you would have more luck contacting your guide or fish camp co-ordinator. They would have a better handle on local info.

Bring your winter woolies and your mosquito spray. Never can tell what you'll need.

Fabric is much more expensive in Canada than in the US. It might be fun to visit the shops there, but not so much fun to pay the higher prices.

Hi. If I am correct it is Ontario. I think Kingston is around there somewhere to. Husband is already be sleeping so I can't ask him but I think I remember him saying we could "go over to Kingston". Does that make any sense?

I know here in Pa it is going to be cooler, coming me own from Canada, so I guess it will be rather cool in Canada. OK with me, I am not fond of too much heat. It has been so hot here this summer that I am looking forward to the fresh cool air. Don't worry though, the sunscreen, mosquito spray and heavier jackets will be coming along too. Thanks for your help.

    Hi Dunster
Thanks for your help. I did hear the fabric was more expensive. I met a group of girls at the Lancaster Quilt show and they rented a van and drove down from Canada and spent tons of money on fabric cause it was a lot cheaper. Coming into Lancaster it was really well priced. I drive that 2 hours a few times a year for those prices. Guess I'd like to see what they tend to like as far as fabrics and quilting. Each shop here is different so I can only imagine how different they will be. And hubby said I could go to any quilt shop I see, so who could pass up that deal, right? Thanks again
    Debbie

Okay googled again and it looks like Westport is north of Kingston (which is the home of Queens University where my DD got her Bachelor of Nursing Sciences several years ago) It is still in the middle absolutely nowhere but a huge distance from what google gave me for Mosquito Lake. Hmmm....I googled quilt stores in Kingtston and came up with two. Have not visited either but at least that is an option.

If you are coming thru Waterton, I think there a a couple of stores there too. Just google and search. And if you are not into the wilderness/hunting/fishing thing, you might find some interesting stuff just by striking up a conversation with the hunt camp help.

There is a quilt shop or two in Sudbury Ont., But Sudbury is a little far from where you are going. I assume you are going to Ontario.

How long will you be staying in Westport? Although it may appear it is in the middle of nowhere, you are just over an hour away from our nations Capital, Ottawa. The town of Perth is about 25 minutes away if my calculations are right. Here is a website of a fabric store in Perth. http://www.perthfabrics.com/ I have also searched and found this site for Ottawa Valley Quilt Guild it gives you a lot of info. http://www.ottawavalleyquiltersguild.org/links.html.
This is an area of lots of lakes and a huge tourist area so I am sure you will find someone from the area to point you in the right direction.
Enjoy your stay in the area, there is a lot to do, you just have to travel a little to enjoy all of it. I lived in Ottawa for three years 15 years ago and I would go back there in a heart beat.

These are all websites for quilt shops in and around the Perth/Ottawa area, which are sort of near where you might be going.
There is a website for Ontario quilt shops at:
    http://quiltersresources.net/shops_on.html
which is where I found these shops listed. I tried to pick the ones that were relatively near Westport. The one at Rideau Ferry is likely the closest.
Good luck, enjoy the trip and the opportunity!

We have a cottage in Perth so we are there a lot and I will confirm that the fabric in Canada is terribly expensive. Even I, who has never passed up a fabric store in my life, do not go to stores in Canada since I know that the fabric will cost more than I am willing to pay.

Perth Fabrics is right on the main street of Perth and its a gorgeous town, well worth the visit. My DH's favorite pizza in the world is right across the street at the Perth Restaurant, although we cannot figure out why he likes it so much.

Westport is a nice picturesque town as well. And Ottawa is a day trip for you. Pea green with envy, since I'm not sure when I will get back to the area and our lake.
