I used one as batting for place mats years ago. It did work, but before long become unstable and lumped up. The blanket was already old at that time, so not sure if a newer one might not have been fine for a longer period of time.

I also had a few of the Vellum Blankets. After about 5 years the foam in the center rotted and as I was using it, the blanket started shredding in my hands. They are nice and soft, but not for a quilt instead of batting. Stay with the tried and true.

It seems to be unanimous to NOT use a Vellux blanket as batting. Guess I will see if the local animal shelter would like these for dog beds. I really, really appreciate all of the input. Probably saved me a LOT of grief!

I don't think it would be a good idea. I love vellux blankets, but once they start to fall apart, they really fall apart. I'm afraid that even with quilting you would have a real mess down the road.

I would not use it. We had a vellux blanket for about 10 years, washed it again and what came out of the washer was just the mesh insides and some fuzz (separated). It had washed fine up to that point. But when it dies, it dies.
