Default Viking Interlude bobbin thread pick up

I didn't get classes with my machine so it's always been trial and error. I was told that on the Interlude you didn't have to pull up the bobbin thread. I can't get it to work, I always have to pull it up with the top thread. I looked in the manual, but nothing about it is mentioned. Any ideas? Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I also have a Viking that's supposed to do this, but I always pull it up first. If I don't it catches, but there's a glop of thread at the beginning of the seam. I learned to sew by always pulling up the bobbin thread, so for me it's no big deal.

I don't have that specific Viking but with mine I can just start sewing after putting in the bobbin. I can't remember ever having snarls or nests doing this. My machine is 10 yrs. Old or so and does not have the thread cutting function for whatever thats worth.
