I was watching a video tutorial featuring Kim Jolly from the Fat Quarter Shop. She was using a Baby Lock walking foot in her tutorial on how to apply binding on a quilt. In the video, she said she always makes a few forward & a few backward/reverse stitches at the beginning & the end of her bindings. Am I wrong or did I read somewhere that you are never to put your walking foot in reverse as this messes up something on the inner workings of the foot? My Brother walking foot went haywire when I accidentally (didn't know any better) made some reverse stitches. What is the proper procedure? Thanks for the help; you members are the best!

I do the same thing as Kim Jolly, haven't had any problems. Interested in what other folks do.

My Bernina walking foot can do reverse. You can check to see if the pads on you walking foot will move backwards, when the foot isn't on the machine. Just move them up and down, back and forth with your finger. If they are free moving in all 4 directions, then you can do reverse. Might be a good idea to check your manual -- just in case.

I do a few reverse stitches like that on my Juki with the walking foot and have not had any problems. I have heard the "no reverse" rule too, but just assumed that meant long stretches in reverse, not just a couple of stitches.

Read your manual. I don't think the generic walking feet are meant to reverse. The cheap part I had with my brother machine may have broken because I did that. My Bernina walking foot does reverse, but has a smaller window as far a stitch size for reverse and cautions strongly about keeping it in that range.

I also have the Bernina walking foot and go forward and backwards with no problem.

I've always been able to sew in reverse with any walking foot I have had and on any machine I've had.
