I too have the framed painted peg board and love it. My DH just used narrow scraps on the back to get some spacing for the hooks and it worked great.
On the upper right side of mine, I have a pocketed shoe caddy hanging that I can keep all kinds of things in. I just used the peg hooks to hang it from.
I also hang some attractive containers on my pegboard for storing things in, not just using the hooks and flat surface.
I have half pails with flat backs, pretty bags, and all kinds of things that increase my storage options and space.

Peg board is the way to go. You can put all your quilting thing on them. Here is a picture of mine. Hope you can get some idea's here. I have everything at my finger tips. When I get done using them I put them right back. Keep it nice and neat.

If you paint the pegboard with chalk board paint, then you can outline the pieces with chalk, if you ever decide to reorganize the board, just erase the outlines and draw new ones

Absolutely so helpful. Had not thought about the peg board needing to be away from wall. Thanks again for great comments.

I made mine from pegboard cut to fit the inside of my double door closet. Then bought the hooks in different lengths to hang the rulers. I used 1" x 1" strips of wood on the back of the pegboard to hold it out from the door. Now I can rearrange the rulers when I buy new ones and all can be seen at once.

I stressed over the same choices. I finally went with plastic pegboard. You can order it in various sizes and kit configurations and colors. It went up pretty easily. I got white and it came with all the hooks and whatnot. Here is the website (I think) I used http://wallpegstore.com/. You can buy individually or in kits. No frame needed, standard hooks fit etc. Maybe I can figure out how to post a picture.

If you have a solid door you could hang it on that. Mine are double glass French doors. So I cant. Just thought it is a idea maybe for you that would save space.

To me, a peg board would take up too much room on my walls. I have a wooden hanging ruler holder that holds over 25 rulers and beneath has hooks for scissors and rotary cutters. I bought two of them. It even has a door on it and when you open it, you can put things in it. I got it from Clyde's Workshop. His website is clydes-workshop.com. Click on the one that says 'Wall Mounted'. They are made very well.
