I use a thick terry bath towel , folded in thirds on my Formicas counter top in the kitchen. Works great for smaller things .

Be careful, I ruined the top of my sewing cabinet and I thought I had it protected.

I made one using a ceiling tile. Covered it with batting and then cotton on one side and Teflon sheet on the other side. Very portable.....I also use the tv tray to put it on sometimes.
