Wash flannel before making blanket? Binding?

I always wash flannel with a Color Catcher before I put it in a quilt. Actually, I wash and dry it twice. And I do use it as binding and I like it a lot. I have to cut my binding just a tiny bit wider than I normally do, but it makes a great binding.
