The washed vs unwashed subject comes up frequently. I'm wondering though, how many of us use both in a project and just hold our breath to see if it turns out ok?? I haven't tried it yet. Just wondering.

Always, always wash first. If it is going to shrink or bleed, better to do it first, than have puffy, tight stitches or "dyed" fabric. Even if it doesn't waste much money in fabric...my time is worth much more now. Any hand dyes or fabrics I dye myself, I always wash in hot.

I've done it and have had mixed results. I usually prewash unless I'm taking a class and the instructor specifically asks that the fabric no be washed. But, I'm more comfortable washing it before cutting. Then I get a good sense about bleeding (those darn reds) and how the fabric looks after it's been washed.

I will say, that after making a quilt for my son and then having to do a little "spot" wash and seeing the brown bleed onto the yellow part (obviously I didn't prewash) I am going to prewash everything now. ANyone know how to prewash a jelly roll? lol

I am not normally a prewasher, but if a fabric or two need it, then it all gets prewashed for that quilt. I am not brave enough to try some washed/some not LOL :D:D:D

LOL I am a hope and pray kind of girl! Guilty for not being a prewasher. Lets hope those color catchers always work.

I never prewash anything and never have had a problem.

I think in my IRR quilt that there are some materials that are prewashed and some that aren't. It's at the LAQ now. I'll let you know when I get it home and wash it, but I'm willing to bet a paycheck it's ok.

And yes, I do manage to make more than one or two quilts a year. I have better things to do with my time than prewash fabric. Now, if I had nothing better to do.....nah, I still wouldn't.    But those of you with lots more energy and time, knock yourselves out. We will always find ways to justify doing something we are convinced we should (or shouldn't) be doing.

In the end, it's going to be your decision as to whether you believe it's necessary or not. There is not law about either.
