    I always, always prewash unless it is precut fabric in a kit. (However, I never buy kits anymore) For jelly rolls, I just handwash the strips in the sink, and rinse until the water is clear. I put them in the dryer for a short time, remove when still damp, then press. I have had color run from even the most expensive/reputable brands.
