This is what I do, also. I have a large washer, with no agitator, and use the bulky/bedding setting (maximum water), to make sure I get all of the Elmer's School Glue out.

you will probably get lots of different opinions on this one! when I finish the binding on a quilt the next step for me is to put it into the washer & wash it- generally a normal setting, with cool water- and a small amount of regular detergent. I tend to wash it exactly the way I believe who ever is receiving it is going to take care of it- if it is too big for my washer I go to the laundrymat- but my machine can handle a pretty big quilt- then I toss them into the dryer- again- normal settings. even my wool quilts are laundered this way- I've never had any problem/issue arise - I toss in color catchers if i'm worried any about any colors running- but normally if that may be a problem I already pre-washed that fabric anyway- when making donation quilts that are going to kids in hospitals or emergency shelters those quilts are going to be laundered in commercial laundries they are not (babied) so I figure they better be able to hold up- also, if something does happen (a seam come loose, find a hole, stitching break, color run..what ever) I find it first- when I have laundered the quilt and then I can fix it before anyone receives the quilt- and I am assured it is going to hold up be fine no matter how the recipient cares for it.

The dryer would be more iffy than the washer. If the quilt is stuffed in the dryer tightly, it will not tumble (move) enough -- meaning fabric will stay indefinitely next to the holes where the hot air comes out. This will result in burn marks where the holes are. I found this out by stuffing a large mattress cover in my admittedly very small dryer; the white cover came out with small brown circles where it had stayed next to the air holes. You don't want this to happen to a quilt!

I toss mine in my front-loading washer, warm water, regular detergent. Dryer, medium heat.
The laundry mats in my area are absolutely disgusting, anything I wash comes out stinking worse than it did going in. I wouldn't wash a dog bed there.

ROFL! That's exactly how I wash mine, too. In fact, that's how I wash EVERYTHING. If it can't be washed in warm water and dried in a dryer, I don't buy it....
