    Butterfli: Guess I'm too sleepy at this time of night but I have no idea what you are talking about in your original post and am more confused by all the answers and advice. I don't understand why you are ripping the selvedge off to begin with.

    NOT RIPPING THE SELVEDGE, BUT SELVEDGE-TO-SELVEDGE TO GET A STRAIGHT-GRAIN LINE

    You are not hallucinating, I have one of her older self published books, and she said to tear the fabric into strips. She only uses rotary cutters in her current instructions.

    There is no way to get the fabric perfectly even when cutting from a bolt. You'll always have waste from the fold not being straight.

    I was taught by LQS not to pre-wash and not worry about straightening the grain. Most quilt peices are cut so small that being off grain will not matter when the quilt is finished. You only need to worry about straight of grain when making clothing due to fabric will not drape right if grain is off. Also many fabrics are printed crooked so if grain is straigh then pattern will be off. I would rather have straight pattern that straight grain.
