One other way I've seen suggested here, is to have a clear template of the outside size you want, including the seam allowance. Then place it on the picture you want to "fussy cut" and hold it there, then draw around the flower/animal/car, etc with something that can be washed off the template. Then you can find the exact same cut all over the fabric piece. Mark and cut and sew.

I cut plastic templates in the size I want - and then "frame" the "finished" part with 1/4 inch masking tape. (One could also just draw a line 1/4 inch from the edge.

I've found that making/having two or three of these templates can help with placement - especially if one has limited fabric and wants to minimize the waste.

One can also put those sandpaper dots on them to help keep them from slipping.

I just rotary cut around the templates. One could also trace around them and cut the piece out with a scissor.

(Looks like I may need to make a new template - I just noticed a curve on one of the edges)

Here is a website that was a lifesaver when I was learning to quilt. You will need high speed internet to watch the videos.

Thank you so much for directing me to this sight Rose Marie. I have watched several of the vidoes and found them to be so very helpful. I loved the video of the Flying Geese Christmas Tree skirt and hope to make one in the coming year.
