I found a Windmill pattern that uses 2 different colors and have jelly rolls I'm using. The pattern says to sew two 2" wide strips of each color together and then cut into 3 1/2" pieces to make a 6" block. (There are other measurements to use with wider strips.) Four of the 3 1/2" pieces are used to make the block but when I lay it out 2 of the 4 pieces are about 1/4" too long/wide than the other 2. This can't be that hard because it's so simple. What am I doing wrong? Here's a link in case I haven't explained myself well enough. http://www.suite101.com/content/easy...blocks-a235661
I'd appreciate anyone who could take a look. Thanks! :-)

Kim - looks like your placement of block section one is to be turned that the turq. fabric is at the upper left going up and down.

    Try that.

You sew 2 2" strips together. You now have a strip x" long and 3.5" wide. Now you cut that length of strip to 3.5" long pieces - so you should have 3.5" squares made up of two colors.

Is the wrong side from the length cut or the width?

Just a thought. Are all the jelly roll strips trimmed down to 2".

This is what happens. Actually none of the sides match up.

I've added a picture of my block. Since I'm using white and orange (my son is a huge Tennessee Vols football fan) the white takes the place of the aqua color in the example. I feel so stupid not being able to figure this out!

Kim after you sew your 4 blocks together to make 1, it should be correct. Remember that 1/4" seam? Let us know how it turns out.

I deleted the picture that had the 4 sections numbered because the pieces weren't going in the same direction as the picture I left. Didn't want you to think you had seen something that wasn't there. LOL!!

When I sew them together using the scant 1/4" seam I'm still going to have the uneven outside edges. Right? This is how I'm seeing this. One side of the individual piece measures 4" (the 2 strips sewn together) and the other side measures 3 1/2" (cut pieces from strip) not including the seam allowance. That doesn't make a square like they say it does. Understand what I'm saying? This is really making me feel like a dunce. LOL!!
