I absolutely LOVE my automatic cutter. I don't have to go digging for the thread, I just start my next seam.

I don't have auto cut or a single hole sole plate ans thread can get tangled and to prevent this when starting stitching I always start the stitching with a 'rabbit'. A small scrap to lead the thread. No more tangles.

I think if you do this on your machine it will solve the problem. Some people use HSTs or pair of four patches to start stitching and after a while they have enough to make a quilt!

Thanks for all the replies. It was really interesting to read all the different preferences. I tried my cutter again and sometimes I get a nest, sometimes, I don't. I don't like the nests so I'll go back to hanging on to the threads for a couple of stitches. I was really curious as to why some of you loved your auto cutters and now I know. Thanks.

never use the thread cutter when doing FMQ. Doesn't leave enough tail.

BellaBoo, wish I could picture what you mean by the three hole bar. I have a Viking Mega Quilter that unthreads when I use the cutter. It has a 3 hole bar and I am going to try threading it different thru that bar and see if it makes a difference, ( As soon as I get it back from its 5 year service). Thanks for that bit of info.

When using the cutter, if, the thread is being cut too short or left too long, that's an adjustment your dealer should be able to correct for you. It sounds like yours is being left too long, which causes the nests. My bobbin winder would never fill a bobbin all the way til a small adjustment was made by my dealer.

My 10 year old machine has a thread cutter which I have never used. After reading this, I am going to try it out tomorrow. If I keep using it, I should save lots of thread.

Some of my machines have it and some do not, I do find it nice but not a must have.

Automatic on the Pfaff 2100 series just leaves too little bobbin thread to grab. Even when embroidering. I've turned off automatic and will only use the cutter if I can't get to the thread easily. These Pfaffs have the vertical bobbin. The newer Pfaffs with the drop in bobbin seem to do much better.

Although I have the cutter on the "new" machine I still do the leaders/Enders and have been slowly getting enough scrap blocks for a nice old-fashioned everyday quilt....
