I think this is what I have used, or something similar......no shrinkage...and..this is the only time I prewash the fabric in a dishpan...not full process in washer/ dryer....just quick soak, rinse, dry, iron....placemats will always be flat and not crinkly after washing from use.

For me the perfect batting is that long strip of batting I have left over after trimming a project. It's a perfect fit. I use Warm and Natural.

I use deco bond by pellon. This gives a professional finish. My placemats sold out first at our guild's booth. The batting does make a difference. The other members that made some placemats say well I had this batting I wanted to use up so used that.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I have bags of left over pieces from the many quilts I have created. Sooooo, this afternoon I went through the bags and found the perfect pieces of Warm and Natural that I zig-zagged the larger pieces and got all of the place mats sandwiched and didn't even have to go out in the rainy weather. You are all a great group to help us quilters out to save money. Thanks again....will post a picture or two when I get both the quilt done and the place mats quilted.

I have used warm and white before and the place mats lay flat and the quilting designs show up well.

I made a table runner with white Flannel once, vs the batting. I pre-washed the flannel before using it. The runner stayed flat on the table and I didn't have to worry about how close to quilt the designs. The fabric had a busy pattern and the quilting designs would not show up well anyway. After washing, the runner kept a clean crisp look and not crinkly like cotton batting gives you after washing.

I too use flannel, well washed, it gives a nice softness without the bulk at the edges that cause tippy glasses.
