I have always used the Pigma marking pens. I think you can still buy them at JAF:

Pigma pens. Just make sure to look at the size. A little bigger nib is better. They also come in different colors.

Mine has black ink and is made by Dritz, I believe. I like to set with the iron either before I sew it onto the back of the quilt, or after.

Pigma Pens are the absolute best! Michaels has a couple of sets with tons of colors. I like them because they have small nibs and do not bleed.

A label I used a Pigma pen to write, it has faded to very faint after several washings. I used cotton fabric for the label. The label I used a thin Sharpie to write, hasn't faded.

I didn't have luck with Sharpies (saw a quilt I had made that gets used and washed alot. Can SEE the words...cannot READ the words!) and Pigma ran for me and then washed out even after heat setting. I settled on a fabric marker. Found it in the t-shirt decorating section of Michaels. I like the thin point best and the brand is Fabrico. As always, try out a few and see what works for YOU. JMHO

Micron pigma pens are good. Joann's, Michael's, and Hobby Lobby carry them.

Forgive me for being naive, but wouldn't a free-motion signature be sure to last?

I think a dye pen will be the best. I need to get some.
