I have used all brands. I like a thin thread to use for piecing and even thinner in the bobbin. I use size 60 or 70 and even found Aurifil in 80wt. If I use a size 50 3 ply for the top thread I use the thinnest thread I have for the bobbin. I would buy any good brand that was on sale and be sure to match the needle size to the thread size.

I use Presencia Thread (I think 40 wt). I buy a big cone of a med tan and use it to piece everything except dark to dark.

For piecing, I use only Aurifil. For garments, I use Gutterman or Mettler.

Gutterman mostly because joann's is close, but have used mettler, coats, madiera, connectingthreads, all with no problems. You don't have to use cotton to piece, it is an old myth. They have a lot of nice poly threads these days. I use whatever's handy. I haven't seen to much difference in lint among the brands I use cotton thread is lintier than poly anyway, plus I am a notoious cleaner after I sew.

For piecing I use Connecting Threads. I get it in the big cones in white, offwhite and black. For machine quilting on my sit down Lizzie, I really like Glide thread. It's awesome - perfect tension every time and it quilts beautifully with no lint or breakage. I'm totally smitten with Glide.

I use Connecting Threads for both piecing and quilting. I love their thread and would love to see them add some variegated colors.
