At a recent quilt show one of our members made a butterfly quilt from antique hankies. She folded the hankies to look like butterflies and embroidered the antennae and head.

I still remember one I saw many years ago. The owners had made a
framed wall display of 3 old hankies, with granny glasses, a pair of old
fragile white leather gloves, a long, long hat pin and a long cigarette
holder among other things!! This turned out lovely, and it was titled
"Mamma's Memories" in faded embroidery on faded blue material.

I hope to make one of these some day with my own Grandma's stuff..
granny glasses, corn cob pipe (I ain't kidding here!) a piece of her old,
sun bleached bonnet she wore gardening, etc. That will bring back the
memories for myself and dozens of first cousins.

I've been collecting old lace hankies to make a special quilt for my own bed. You can cut them on the diagonal and scatter them. They make beautiful bed linens.

There is a rather nice book entitled Hooked on Hankies written by Suzanne McNeil that has some lovely ideas on what to do with hankies! I think it would be sweet to give each grandchild a framed hankie as a remembrance. Have fun!!

Some people make quilt blocks using hankies. If she has enough she could make small wallhangings for each person using a few blocks with hankies in each one. Hankies can be used to make cute butterflies or fan blocks.

Personally, I use hankies to make labels for my quilts, usually 1/4 of a hankie per label.

My SIL made a quilt using them for butterflies on a square. Don't know how she did it....or if there is a pattern out there.

You could make a envolope quilt, and have the hankies be the flaps to the envolopes. I seen something like that on kaye woods, under the lazy girls. God bless. Penny
