simply a square surrounded by a frame of fabric? I want to make a fast and easy quilt with some batiks I have on hand. I know I can use 2.5" strips for the block frame, but I am thinking I need 3.5" or 5" squares for the centers. The quilt I am thinking of alternates dark inside/light outside with light inside/dark outside. Help? Also, any photos would be welcome!

I think you could use any proportion you wanted.

I just tried the fold and sew to make the square in a square. Easy peasy. I cut my own 10" blocks because I couldn't find what wanted.

I have always called this block Square in a Square. There are so many ways of making this simple block. Here are some of my quilts I have made with this block.

That's also a pattern that lends itself very well to Quilt as you go if you want to put sashing (joining strips) in between the blocks. The joy of doing it that way is that you really don't have to measure anything but your batting and backing squares, since you can cut the piecing fabrics as you go.

Thanks so much! I think I am going to go with 5" centers and 2.5" strips. Sometimes easy is good.

Edit: p.s. I love those off-center squares, Maniac. Hadn't thought of doing that, and it would be super easy. That will be my next one!

I made a quilt like this or at least what I think you mean. Colored squares surrounded by a patterned white.
Squares were 4.5, finished at 4 and surround[ATTACH=CONFIG]550899[/ATTACH]ng frame was 2.5, I think.

Edited to add: The frame was 2.5 but it looks like I added some sashing between these "blocks", as well. Wonder now why I did that? Edited yet again -- I'm on a roll today! No, looks like I've sewed the framed blocks together so I have 4 inches of white surrounding my color blocks. This was an early effort and I was winging it, as I did when I began, just letting it be what it would be.
