I have a friend who uses them for crafts. She uses them to make off the floor storage racks for their mudroom (writes the kids names on the end with their favorite color marker. Doesn't matter if they're plastic or wood.

I am collecting them to make a garland out of them. Wrap a scrap of fabric around the center, then thread them together. Our quilt guild uses these garlands around special exhibits at shows and visitors always love them.

This is a great idea! I actually saw this on Pinterest and was going to post it, but you beat me to it! I save the wooden ones but threw out the plastic. Now I am saving the plastic one to make this garland.

I use a cone holder at home, but when I go to class or one of my groups, I use a coffee cup too. Instead of a pin I clothespin a ruler to the side of the cup. (with the ruler tucked into the cup on the bottom) Thread the thread thru one of the holes and VOILA! A traveling cone holder

What a cute idea. You have the knowledge to make your own stamps? Nice! I have a huge drawer in my basement filled with rubber stamps. I don't know how to make them though.
My answer to your question, I toss them when empty or close to it.

I taped a safety pin to the top of my machine on the back right hand side, so that the eye hole (not where the pin latches) is upright. Then I feed the thread from the cone through it and then it threads on my machine just like a spool. I don't even use the coffee cup, just place the cone behind my machine under the safety pin. Works great.
