I'm just starting to learn to quilt and I like some of the rules, like using the iron (not one of my favorite things), but when it comes to putting fabrics together and playing with the machine I do whatever I want. There's nothing like coloring outside the lines and creating something diferent.

I make copies of patterns, but they are for my own use. I use the copy to write on while I am making the project. I keep my patterns clean and neat that way.

    I machine-bind...or at least I plan to. I don't pre-wash.
I have never as yet made a binding for a quilt. I always add strips on all four sides of the top layer. Cut the batting and back side the same as top layer. Sew all three pieces together leaving a Gap on one side and turn the whole shebang. Being sure all three are layered proper sequence. Quillow instructions explain how to layer. Works well for me. Not brave enough yet to try binding.....

There's a national quilt teacher that advocates not ironing until the whole block is done.

Well, right now I am trying an experiment with a quilt I'm working on... I am pressing the seams open instead of toward the dark. I read that idea somewhere on this board. It just comes more naturally to me because I have been a garment sewer since I was 9 years old. I'll let you know how it turns out (LOL).

Real quilters have no rules period IMHO.

Quilting has been around for centuries and there were no rules back then and there should be none now.

Personally I live to annoy the quilt police and do my own thing.

An art form comes about when someone experiments and creates something they like and that is what quilting is about as far as I am concerned.
