I would second the idea of looking at the moda bake shop site. The patterns are usually quite well written.

I usually buy at least two charm packs that are the same fabrics. Then there are many things I can do with them. I had about 4 of them recently and was not all that crazy about many of the fabrics. I cut them into fourths and added white sashing and made a quilt, turned out really nice. I look at patterns and see what I can do with the charm squares and its amazing what I can make, but generally not with just one pack. I also would make the scrap quilts, cut them up really quickly and use them.

The mini charm packs give me lots of fabric choices for EPP and applique. I'm hoping to find a nice pack that I can order for my Calico Gardens quilt (ughhh! so many teeny tiny pieces, but it's soooo pretty!).
