I am not a fan of sampler quilts (but appreciate those who do like them). I take my orphans and the bags of scrap other pieces from my projects and make 24x24 muslin backed scrappy quilt blocks. I then take the other materials and patch them all together in a scrappy quilt. Everything matches, and nothing does. Use lots of blanket stitches and bright color variegated thread to tie everything together.
Unfortunately, scrappy quilts are on the bottom of the To Do list. I suspect the three or four I will have all the pieces together for will have to wait another 20 years (when I run out of projects).

My quilt guild had us all bring our orphans to the meeting, then put names into a hat and drew a winner to raffle them all to one person. They make great sampler quilts!

I am working on a 'modern' quilt right now with orphan blocks. It will have 7 blocks down the center with a few branching our to either side, maybe only three rows of 3 to 5 blocks. The rest will be all white. I have a lot of applique blocks that seem to go together color and theme wise.

I wish those that made quilts out of their orphan blocks would post pictures for us to see.

When I first got into Quilting board I was unable to put things together that "Didn't go together". Since, I found a pattern that I used up scraps of all kinds and kind of made it go. Then I found a comforter at Salvation Army and it was the same size as the quilt top. So I tied the two together. I renamed the quilt "Ruggly" Rita's ugly quilt.
It is so ugly that it is kind of pretty. I to have orphan pieces. Most of mine are the ones that are suppose to be
3-1/2 x 3-1/2 after the diagonal cut from a 3-7/8" square that aren't wide enough. How they get that way is a mystery to me when I am so careful after some maddening trial by error moments. Mostly error. After my ugly quilt top I am going to try another top and see if I can get any uglier. It is all fun for me and makes my laugh.

Most odd blocks don't look good together, so I make mug rugs of them and let them stand alone and shine!

I use mine to make quick gift items such as pot holders, mug rugs etc. They are also very god for FMQ practice pieces sandwiched with whatever batting scraps and ugly fabrics/another orphan block I happen to find. Later these pieces are used in potholders for insulation.
