What do you use to fill a Pincushion?

I have used left over wool roving on top then stuffed the rest with crushed walnut shells. So where the pins go is tight packed wool, and the bottom is weighted down with crushed shells. If you have a harbor freight near by, they sell crushed walnut shells by the box full near the sand blasting cabinets/ medium.

Lizard Litter, you get it at the Pet Food store. The smallest bag I could buy was 5 pounds, which is waaayyy more than I needed, so if you can go together with others to split the bag, that would be good. It's finely crushed walnut shells. It's heavy enough to weight the pin cushion so it doesn't slide around. However, I myself mainly use magnetic ones.

The only thing I've ever used is yellow or green split peas. The pins and needles slide right between the peas, it gives a nice weight to the pin cushion and you don't have to worry about them leaking out.

I normally use Lizard Litter too. I bought a clover magnetic pin cushion and love it. Then I read about magnets being a no-no for computers. Is that still true today? Or can we use them near our sewing machines now.

I was also wondering what to put in a pincushion as I am making several for Christmas gifts. I would hesitate to use the walnut shells because of allergies. My DD (aged 21 ) is allergic to tree nuts. She ate a piece of popcorn that had touched a cashew and should have been in the ER. I might try to find some wool to stuff them.

I use silica sand (glass beads) for my pincushions, and have made many, never had any issues with the sand leaking out. I make a small inner bag from BATIKS, as it has a very tight fabric weave.
