Year ago I made one and filled it with rice. Don't like it very much. What do you use?

I've tried many and so far my favorite pincushion is wool.
I can leave my pins and needles in there and it won't rust and the
lanolin probably helps keep them lubricated.

My Mother used to fill them with saw dust.

For the better part I do not have pin cushions ... instead magnets.
I did make a mini one recently and just put some poly batting into it.

I just use fiberfill, but I saved a bunch of walnut shells to try next. Heard it helps to keep the pins sharp.

I would think walnut shells would make the pins dull but I've heard other say they like the shells.

I use the fine decorative sand but you have to double bag it or the fine sand grains will come through the fabric.

I use fiberfill and plastic pellets, used to weight dolls. The fiberfill is for the top and the pellets go into the bottom (in a small bag), to keep the pincushion from falling over.

They do make pins dull, as does any other wood type product like sawdust. They also have serious health consequences for many people who may unknowingly receive a shell stuffed pincushion as a gift.
