I have heard several answers, but I'm not sure what a fat 1/8th is. Can someone tell me?

    instead of 4.5" by 42 a fat 8th is 9" by 24" or 1/2 a fat 1/4

It would be a quarter cut of fabric cut in half (going same direction as the selvage) so it is 9x22.

    HTH!

Many places sell fat eighths measuring 18" x 11", so be sure to read the fine print to know what you're getting. I like the shorter-wider cuts better myself.

One of our local stores cuts the fat eighth at a minimum 9" x 22".

But they really use the fat eighth basket for those 'oops!' cuts. I have gotten pieces up to 13" x 22". It's a bargain for miniature piecing!

Thanks to everyone of you who replied. I was pretty sure my LQS was incorrect when they said it was 9x9", but I wanted to confirm it with people who really know what's going on. (I mean you.) Happy quilting!

I'd go tell your LQS that 9"x9" is a skinny sixteenth!! :-D
