We had a speaker at our guild last month who makes nothing but string quilts, and this is what she does. When she sews the strings onto the paper, she always runs the fabric an inch or so past the paper. She doesn't square up the blocks. When she's ready to remove the paper, she gives the blocks a quick tug in each direction. Since she has shortened her stitch length, the stitching does not pull out, but the paper tears. Once the paper is removed, she presses and squares up the blocks.
She even passed blocks out at the meeting so that we could tug and remove paper so we could see how easy it was. Of course, she got the paper removed from 30+ blocks. Also, she has a daughter who loves to remove the paper from the strings.
