What iron and ironing board do you recommend?

I had one of those Rowentas and destroyed it by knocking if off of the ironing board a few times. DH put it back together again, but the last time was a killer. I now have a Black and Decker. It's OK, but it has a safety shut-off which I don't like.

My ironing board is going to be 44 years old at the end of July. Yup--got it when I got married!lol I had to replace the rubber tips on the legs about 5-10 years ago--I guess they just don't make them to last(ha, ha It !) It has a green metal table (some rusting but not much) and beautiful chrome legs that I cleaned with SOS about 10 years ago and they look brand new. Hope I never have to replace it cause my Dad bought it for me and he is gone now.

I have a sumbeam iron I have had for about I don't know maybe 10 years, got it at bi-mart. my iron board is a pocket door with 1 layer of batting and 1 layer of musilin. I but it over table or cutting table. works great. my hubby got me a black and decker iron about 2 months ago, because it shuts off, because I forget all the time, but if your not using it, it shuts off in 8 minutes. It heats back up in 90 secounds, but it is a pain for me. God bless Penny

I have had more luck with the cheaper irons than the expensive ones over the years. My main trouble has been with rust even though I drain all the water out after using steam. I have now solved the problem totally by not using any steam at all and in place I use a small misty spray bottle which I can regulate the amount of spray from. I have done this for years and I am very happy with the results!

Thought this might be a good place to add a great tip for those who like to make their own ironing board covers as I do!
I make the cover out of thermal curtain lining, the 100% cotton one, in white or cream, and use sheeting elastic to sew on the outer edge to give a snug fit. This method is very tough wearing!!!

Is it best to get an expensive iron or are some of the cheaper ones as good?
Thanks for your help.

BTW, I saw a dresser that would be perfect to turn in to an ironing center in Big Lots. It was $145. If you're going to pay that much for an ironing board you should get lots of great storage too!!

Bearisgray ... this is so simple, yet absolutely brilliant!
I have always had problems with my ironing board cover bunching up when ironing large pieces of fabrics. Now it's as tight as a drum! Thank you so much for posting
