Has anyone done a free motion tutorial on the QB using a Singer 301?
I'm just starting practicing on a 10" quilt sandwich and I'm wondering how I'd do a full size quilt that is also a work in progress block by block.
It would be great to see how someone maneuvers the quilt on the 301 to do FMQ.

I was able to take a class on FMQ this weekend. It was wonderful. She said 2 things that may be helpful for you. 1. Never roll your quilt as you go - it makes the roll fight with you, just scrunch it up.
    2. You only need the space where your hands are holding the quilt, to guide your quilt as you are quilting - open and flat. The rest of the quilt can be scrunched around your hands and in the area around you. Practice!!!! Blessings as you quilt and create.

I have a Bernina 440 QE and the biggest I've done is a twin. I am trying to work my way up to a larger quilt. Wendy the FMQ by your Juki on your Pink Princess is great! I must have missed the first posting and I'm glad you posted it in your reply. Just goes to show that it's the person behind the machine that matters most!

I had one and couldn't move it as well, stiches were really wonky, so went to a LA with a Pro-stitcher, love it.

love it, just need to get the coordination down, but the stitches and tension are excellent on it for FMQ

All vintage machines EXCEPT that I have a Pfaff Hobby GQ1200 on a frame....don't like it much tho...it's pretty temperamental.

This is exactly how I use the 301, even though it's a 15-91 in the pictures.

Heap your quilt on the cabinet and a table behind the cabinet and if possible, on a table to the left of your cabinet.

Push the area you will start with under the foot and smooth out an area that you can keep nice and taut around the foot. The rest of the quilt will just be heaped up around that center area where you're stitching.

As you get that area quilted, you just shift the heaps around and make sure that you can keep that center area taut and free of drag from the rest of the quilt.

I agree that you shouldn't roll your quilt - that is a major fight compared to just piling it up and leaving it loose. Yes, it can get tricky when the area under the arm is stuffed - but the 301 has a pretty large area and a king size should present no problem at all. :)

    Hope that helps! :)

I thought I had a picture of the center of the quilt that shows the table on the left and the heap in front of the cabinet. I'll try to find that for you. It looks impossible when you are doing that center part, but after that it gets a lot easier.

This is near the outer edge - the quilt was about 90" square when I started this part of the quilting - before I put the borders on.
