Is it the weave (loose?????) or the design (often plaids/checks...but I see other designs too) or...? When in a fabric store, how do you know which fabrics are homespun?

I'm asking because I want to make a rag quilt and the recommendations are flannel or homespun.

    Thanks in advance...

Homespun is a loose, coarser weave. It is often plaids. The reason they recommend it for a rag quilt is because it will fray easily.

Thank you! How do you know that a fabric is "homespun"? Is it labelled as such?

A homespun will have a thread woven design...plaids, stripes, and the fabric is a bit coarser than printed designs.

In most of the fabric stores I go to they have a sign that says Homespun.
