I agree! Next thing you know, people will claim it's only a quilt, if it's hand-pieced, hand-quilted, and then ONLY if one uses a certain brand of 100% cotton thread and a certain type of batting. Oh, and let's not forget the mandatory LQS-sold fabric. Then, heaven forbid if you sew it on an inexpensive sewing machine, from WalMart!
.....or horrors, bought your fabric second hand!...........and then tied it!

I was told a quilt is 3 layers of fabric stitched together.
Now been told it's not a quilt if there is no batting/wadding in the centre.

    Which is correct. Please?
It sounds as if you have three layers, but if you did not and you wanted to call it a quilt, it's a quilt in your house. froggyintxas

Oh, NO!!!! That's almost as bad as buying your fabric from the dreaded you-know-where!

Well, I gave the question a moment of thought, and then decided that it's a quilt. Why?

    a) because it is
    b) The quilt police often say things that are not neccessarily true to bolster their own high opinion of themselves.

So true and very well said. Folks who tell me what I 'should' do are often placed in the category of people I 'should' avoid.

why does it matter how someone else defines a quilt?

Drat, I can't type what my response to that is, but you're all smart enough to figure it out!

LOL, I know...I really like this lady and she's not usually "quilt police-y" so I just let it go. My grandmother made QUILTS all her life and they were ALL tied. And she bound them by bringing the flannel backing around to the front and machine-sewing it down, too. (gasp!)

Who knew my Gran was such a rebel!! LOL

edited to add what I came here originally to post and forgot:

I recently had some quilt labels made on Spoonflower, and I actually have a definition of what a quilt is (to me) right on them. I put on there, "A quilt is a hug trapped in fabric" along the top, then the bottom says "This hug trapped for you with love by ___________" with my name & city. The center is blank so I can hand-write in there. I am FINALLY going to start labeling my quilts!

I agree, don't get bogged down in the details. If you feel it's a quilt, it's a quilt
