I prefer to use my 8.5" x 24" ruler. That way I can estimate yardage based on number of folds - 4 folds is going to be very close to 1 yard. I use a narrower ruler for pieces under one yard. For 1-3 yards, I tri fold the fabric after I have it rolled, and for longer than 3 yards, I fold it in half. That way it all fits on my shelves nicely.

This how I fold my fabric also. I like to have the selvage out and on it I write the yardage. If I use some, I subtract and mark the new amount.

I ruler fold my fabric also. In addition to the other tips listed, I use coated hairpins to keep the fabric intact so as I go through my bins of fabric, it does not come unfolded. Bought a few sheets of hairpins to do this but not expensive.

Thanks GingerK, I like the book arrangement better than a stack and when we finish our reno I will have a dedicated sewing room.
AlvaStitcher Pretty fabric. I'll keep your hairpin idea in mind. Thanks

I *like* this idea! I have mine kind of comic book board folded, but without the boards, and put in those foldable fabric cubes and I don't like how they get floppy. I also love books, so having my fabric in "books" will make me happy. Thanks all for your help.
