I agree with you as well as quiltcandy. I tend to throw anything leftover from the quilt top I'm working on into my scrap boxes. I have them labeled, cut-offs........section we trim off when making our borders. I stitch mine using the miter method...........strips for 1.5 to 2.5, 3.0 to 4.5 and larger pieces 5.0 +. Then I have a tote for the orphan blocks. I also have a box I threw strips in when making the Craftsy Spider Blocks and Diamond Blocks. If the piece is at least 1/2 yd, it goes back onto the comic book board it came from or a new board.

If I can't cut a leftover piece into 2 1/2 x 20 inch strips or 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 bricks, then I consider it scrap. The last two years I carefully cut anything less than 2 1/2 into strips to use in a string quilt. I muddled through making string half square triangles paired with a neutral until I had half enough squares for a comfort quilt. I decided I hated sewing string quilts, packed up the strips, the blocks, the neutral and the muslin and called a friend in our quilt guild to come get it. She loved it!!

I use any size and if too big, I'll cut it to the size I want and any shape.

I'm so with you on this, but when I mindlessly sew I like to make 9P's..any size. Just finished a large quilt made up of 648 1 1/2" finished 9P's.. or 5382 1" squares plus 576 squares and rectangles to make the finished blocks. Add the 71 setting squares....well you get the picture. That's a lot of s'crap'........

I have a slightly different take on scraps. The leftovers from cutting that are at least 1.5 inch wide strips or 2.5 squares are definitely scraps however I have another category. It's pieces of fabric not big enough to use in anything but a scrappy quilt. These pieces can be any size up to about two yards. I would never cut into a piece of fabric larger than 3 yards for a scrappy quilt because I could use it in a "planned" quilt, but I pretty much know that anything smaller is going to end up as a scrappy.

for me, scraps are anything from 3/4" up to random shapes of larger measurements. i have read similar threads like yours here on the board and was surprised to see that many considered fq's and fat 1/8's as scraps. i thought ..ok! ..and then while reorganizing my scrap stash a couple of winters ago, i incorporated all my scraps in w large stash fq's that i had acquired at yard sale. two large boxes of ”scraps" from that yard sale yielded over 30 yards total of fabric. current project is typical of what i use scraps for ...finished size w binding will be 17" square. small chain squares finish @ 3/4" ...

I've taken scarps and made whole quilts fro them. say 10 blues and muslins and made a 4 patch or nine patch. they were scraps, maybe just 5 x 5 inches. I also do a lot of appplique, so sometimes, those little scraps become a cats nose, or a birds eye, or a petal on a flower, I have a trash bag hanging that is holding smaller pieces, 1 x 5" ors o, it may be what I need for a flower.
