What would you do about backing?

I've never had to replace a backing, but I'm thinking that it would be a lot of work. However, you do not want to be fighting this thing all the way. Things you may want to consider are, when will you be giving it to him, and how big are the needles you are using? I'm wondering if a smaller needle might make a difference.

If you have some of the muslin, backing and a similar t-shirt do a test to see whatthe problem is. Which part of the quilt is giving you problems. Go from there.
I am making a large quilt for my grandson. My daughter asked if I would hand quilt it as I always have. I bought a "premium" muslin because the others I looked at seemed so terribly thin. I didn't think the weave would be a problem, but I'm breaking and bending needles and can hardly puncture the backing with my needles! I haven't completed much quilting so far. Would you tear it all out, basting included, and use another fabric? Or would you tough it out, even if the stitching is larger than usual and hard to do? Thanks for your advice.

I'm sorry to hear that! I use premium muslin for almost all my quilt backings. Never had a problem at all. But then I do stab stitching, one or two stitches at a time and not the tiniest. What sized needle are you using?

I prewashed the backing, so it shouldn't be a problem from sizing. The weave is terribly tight, and much tighter than I've ever seen in a muslin. I've never had a problem quilting through any good muslin before, so I'm bewildered! Looks like I'm tearing it out and starting again! I guess there are worse tragedies!

I wonder if somehow or another you got 100% Sheeting. I love it because it comes in 118" widths, a variety of colors and has a very tight weave. It works great on a long arm. I love not having any seams on the backs of my bigger quilts. I have heard it is very hard to "needle" by hand.
