What would you do?

Someone posted this pattern to me a while ago: http://www.prairiequeenpatterns.com/html/prairie_chicken.html and I have always liked the look of it so I have had a go at it, not the easiest of patterns to follow as there is not much info but I got there in the end and am quite pleased with it.
My question is that all the triangles are made by sewing a square onto another square/rectangle and folding over, now most patterns tell you to trim away the excess but............ I am trying to get rid of some of my scraps not make more so I have not trimmed just left the extra layers in, well it will be warmer won't it ;)

I just made triangles that way but sewed on both sides of the cutting line so when I cut I would have a 1/2 sq triangle block finished. I will use them in the border of the quilt or a pillow to match.
I don't see the problem with leaving them in but fabric is expensive!
