My daughter inherited a Singer 4530 from her MIL, it seems to work ok, but has only one basic foot. She is really getting into sewing and would like a zipper foot, walking foot, etc, to be able to do more. She is on a super tight budget so I thought it would be a good Christmas thing to do. So, my question is, does it make sense to spend money on accessories for this machine or would it make more sense to buy a better but basic machine that has all the feet, etc.? From what I have read, Singer's of this age are not very reliable, and I would hate to have it stop working after buying a bunch of stuff for it...any thoughts? I could spend about 400 dollars for a new machine.

If you opt to purchase another machine, please do your research first and determine the differences in construction as well as price. I've found that irregardless of the $$$ spent on a machine, if the parts are made from plastic, it will not hold up to heavy duty sewing that quilting will require (I purchased two different brother machines over a 5 year span and both died). A brother may be just great for the occasional sewer, but not for an addicted quilter like me. Go to dealers and see if they have a good used machine - I recently bought a used Janome and am amazed at how much better of a machine it is.

Touchy subject! Are you friends with the MIL? If so, you might have some insight into how she would feel? And, as mentioned, you also should consider your SIL's feelings. I kind of agree that perhaps it would be good to let her just work on that one for a while, maybe invest in one more foot for it. Then, a little bit down the road, after the dust has settled, so to speak, maybe for a birthday, invest in a new machine for her. Good luck on this one!

Interesting! I need a walking foot for my Viking 940. Do you think Singer's or Kenmore's would fit mine? (Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread.)

It would be nice for her to have a newer machine Brother makes a nice embroidery/sewing/quilting machine and not super expensive and comes with feet and a bunch of other things. I wouldn't get rid of the old machine and I would hope MIL isn't upset is just happy for her and especially when daughter makes her something pretty and also she knows she has learned a lot on her machine and has to move on so she can do other things. I have purchased an adapter and can use the same snap on feet now for all of my machines. Most all of mine are generic, and I have not had any problems with any of them.
Maybe this will work for your daughter's machine too?
