Mine was a Necchi National. The dealer actually co-signed the loan for me to get it (small town!) I made payments by babysitting and working at the Pickle Factory until I had paid it off. "The good old days" when people actually had faith in you.

Me too. I didn't know how to thread it. No one in my family sewed. I did figure it out, but don't know how. I sewed on a treadle for a long, long time. My first electric machine was when I went to Jr High and took Home Ec.

When I was 26 I purchased my first machine. It is a Brother de Luxe. Has twin needle and embroidery stitching.

My first machine was a Singer too don't remember the model but used it for so many years made all my girls clothes on it until they were in high school (3 oldest) then purchased another one but it wasn't as good as the first one wore out the plastic gears in no time the guy at the repair shop was amazed he had never seen one with the gears so worn done I thought it was funny.

I learned to sew on my mom's "original featherweight" around the age of 12. I still have that machine and still love it!

I learned to sew on my mom's pink Atlas, but my first very own machine was a cheap Brother(I think) that my dad got me for my HS graduation gift in 1974. I believe I used it until my DH bought me a Kenmore in 1983 for Christmas. We must have sold the Brother after that. I do still have the Kenmore.

I have to agree here with the singer treadle as that is what I learned on. While Gram also taught me how to hand embroidery. It was interesting for sure LOL

My kenmore just recently died beyond fixing it . So DH took the motor off and is using it for his gold panning !!LOL I still have my embroidery & sewing maching .. But I had that Kenmore for more than 30 years: straight stitch, reverse and that was it, it sewed many a kids outfit and my oldest daughter's wedding dress and even a few quilts !

I was 25...and it was a very, very old singer...can't remember much about it - I didn't sew back then - but had bought a house and the person contracted for drapes before I moved in didn't pan out....and so a friend had this very old machine that he had originally found in the trash - I think I paid $10.00 for it....and made all of my drapes til I burned that thing out..little did I know at the time how much I would be involved in sewing at this stage of my life :-)..You just never know...
