some of the ladies from my quilt guild use scraps from the fabrics used for the front, or just piece whatever they have handy togethre to make it large enough for the backing. Some of those quilts turned out really cute!

It depends on the receiptient(spelling). If it is a surprise baby quilt or someone who has being cold issues, I use flannel. It can be a patchwork of coordinating flannels or just one colour, depending on the size of quilt. Others, I use cotton, and although it may not be the same fabric line as the front, I do try to coordinate my colours. My stash is slowly dwindling, and with the exception of my avatar quilt, I haven't boughten any fabric in 4-5 years. Once my stash is more depleted I would like to invest in the widebacking. I have used it before, and I see now it comes in a large variety of patterns.

me too! fabric is to expensive for me to buy matching fabric on the back. i have used a coupon to buy a bolt of 90 wide unbleached muslin, and a bolt of bleached.
i wish they sold the 90 wide tea dyed muslin.it only comes 45 here. i but that as needed.
i should try to dye it myself.

I use whatever. Sometimes I coordinate the colors sometimes I dont. On the Queen size that I am quilting now, the back is pieced with whatever, and I mean whatever! I had. Will take a picture and post it.

I use muslin on wallhangings but something that coordinates on bed quilts so they are pretty when turned down. The back should be as pretty as the front without all the work is my theory.

i use tone on tone sometimes but mostly i use sheets that match a color in the quilt. i am making my gd one and she picked fabric, pattern and now(after i get the top made)she wants a black/white quilt. so i'm just going to put the black/white on the back. it will probably be hard to quilt, but i got until graduation!!!!!

I never buy my backing until the top is done. If I have any fabric leftover I try and use it, otherwise a coordinating color. Also I put a label on the back and sometimes "care" instructions. I try and coord. my label also.

If I have enough left I piece the fabric I used on the front, otherwise I use some thing that goes with the front.
