Thank you for your help Dottymo. I've looked up the quilting guild website and found a group that meet in my home town of Rugby. I shall give them a ring

It was sold as reconditioned but it's never been used before. It has 100 stitches and the whole alphabet as well, which I use to make quilt tags. I saw the same model at walmart for $240. It is computerized, but no problems so far. It has needle down and needle threader.
I have to agree with this. I take my SQ-9050 to all my classes and it sewed better buttonholes than 1000 dollar machines there, it pieces nice, is lightweight, and only 200 dollars from walmart. I love my cheapie brother has never given me one bit of problem

I have a Viking Q100 I bought just to take to class and quilting away from home. It is very light weight, wide bed, cost was right, plus my other feet for my Designer 1 fit the 100. Now I have a new FW so will be taking it for sewing away from home but bringing the 100 for a backup. Carrying the designer 1 each time was killing my back not to mention standing on my head each time I had to unplug it.

I'm also a vintage machine fan and love the 301, but since you need a zig zag and other stitches, I'd go with the Jem. I have a Janome 9000 that I'm a big fan of and so many people love their Janomes. I don't think you'll be sorry.

I too got tired of lugging my heavy Bernina around. Bought myself a Jem Gold - which I used and loved for years. Gave to my granddaughter when I got the Jem Platinum, about which I'm crazy: lightweight, needle down function, and best of all, can set for a scant 1/4" seam.

I bought the Janome Jem Gold years ago and it is still sewing like new. The newer model Jem has more features. I don't think you will regret getting the portable Janome.

Featherweight is the absolute best hands down! I even went on an airplane flight and it was small enough to be carry on! It is the perfect machine!
