Hmmm, never heard of soaking the mat before. I think I'll give that a try and see what happens. The Martelli looked really nice but out of my price range. I have an Alto cutter with the white mat but I can still see better with my green Olfa for trimming, etc.

Green olfa's are my favorite since they seem to hold up well. I have a fold-up one with a pressing mat opposite side from the cutting mat side that I love taking to PP or applique classes.

I have the cutter and it took me awhile to get used to how you hold the cutter. The blade lasted forever. When I called them about the cutter they sent me the video, free of charge. Wish I could afford their table.

I prefer the Olfa mats because they last a lot longer. I just had to finally flip my Omnigrid (recommended by LQS) becuase it wore out much too fast. I actually like cutting on the gray back much better but I miss the measurements at the bottom !!!

Martelli hands down!...and i have tried several others. I took my husband with me to the quilt show in Atlanta a couple years ago. I had already planned on getting the rotary cutter. After watching the demo, my husband wanted me to have the mat too. I love it and think it is the best!
