i de-stash by making quilts, table runners, placemats, purses, totes....
the only way i know of to destash is to keep sewing :), making stuff with all that fabric, after all, isn't that what we buy it for?

When my sewing room gets too messy and there seems to be fabric all over the place, I check the stash to see if there is any fabric that I know I won't use because I don't like it anymore. As my taste changes, I destash. No sense keeping stuff I know I will never use.

I haven't been quilting long enough to need to de-stash. The only things I would probably get rid of are the older fabrics I received from my mother and grandmother's stashes.
Some of that stuff just isn't me.

I've sometimes bought pieces that caught my eye but I wasn't totally in love with. After awhile as I started to buy fabrics that I was totally in love with I weeded thru those other pieces.
Some I held onto after looking them over again to use for pieced backings. Others in the pile I now use to make practice blocks or practice various pattern shapes, then I still have scraps for all the other ideas floating in my head for my "one-of-these-days" list of projects.
So it all never really goes to waste in the end.

Destash? I've got to do that, my front spare bedroom is where my sister is going to stay for a while, and it's full, full, full of fabric on cardboard and boxes of fabric and bags of fabric and piles of fabric on shelves and in behind cabinet doors with windows.
I've given some to a church that does quilting (given reluctantly, not in real Christian giving mode, but necessary, sigh) and have lots of other stuff to ..sob, get rid of. And sister doesn't quilt or even sew on buttons, grumble and gripe. A couple of nieces are very enthusiastic about getting some...sigh. But still lots of it in my wall to wall floor to ceiling book case, more fabric than books.

Mine is out of control. I spent about 4 hours today straightening just one 5' bookshelf that has my fruit, food, nautical, sports and birthday prints and I counted 20 different cherry prints.
I have 3 pattern cabinets that are full.. each has 4 or 5 drawers (yes "real pattern cabinets" from when Piece Goods Shop closed down in our town), along with close to 12 bookshelves and numerious plastic containers that are sorted by holiday themes.
I keep telling myself I don't "need" all of this fabric but I don't see many I want to part with.
