    I usually use spray starch.

    yes, I use sizing on the seam before I set the stitches and then press the seam

    I do not use steam. At a class I took two weekends ago, The pattern called to open your seems when you iron. They lay nice and flat. It was a pinwheel pattern. I was surprised how nice things met up and laid flat in the centers.
