i never buy precuts. why pay someone to cut for me? i usually buy 3 yards at a time. i make quilts that are between 95 and 98 square. so if i see a backing i like on sale, that's 9 yards right there. i buy within a certain color range (violets and purples, blues and greens, reds and yellows). no browns, tans, muslins or creams, although i sometimes use them if someone gives them to me. i try to give them away. so, i would say, at least 3 yards up to 9 yards. when sauder's in pa has their bolt sale, i buy bolts. i do gift fq's.

I started off buying fat quarters, then they turned into 1 yard pieces then 2 yards and now I usually buy 3 yards. I buy more of course if the pattern calls for it but I usually buy fabric without a pattern in mind.

I just love how they all have desert names.

I buy by they yard... but occasionally I'll get a fat quarter... And when I do buy by the yard, it's cause it's on sale for a low price!

I just bought 3 yds of Kona white, 90 inch wide the other day....okay I'm not a math whiz but I was thinking that it was like buying 6 yds of regular length width of fabric. Yes?

I used to just by fat qtrs or half yd and split with friend so we'd each have a fat qtr. Now I don't bother with them anymore. I prefer one or more yds.

Yes - 3 yards of 90 inch wide fabric would be same amount of fabric as 6 yards of 45 inch wide fabric.

I almost always by 2-3 yards of whatever really catches my eye. But of course I never have exactly the right piece when I need it, so off to get more! I have discovered that if I need something in particular, I have a hard time just browsing. So I schedule regular trips just to see what's new.

When i first started quilting and did not really know what i was doing, I found myself in Lancaster, PA and went nuts buying 2 to 3 yard pieces of what I thought was gorgeous fabric even if it was on the dark side. Now that I know better, I still have them and cannot seem to work them into any projects. I eventually will but now I only buy a 2 yard piece if it looks neutral and could possibly fit in stuff I already have. I usually get fabric for each project so my stash stays the same. I never could find a use for fat quarters or any of those jelly rolls either. I do not care for tops that have a zillion fabrics in them as it confuses the eye, so i stick to my classical patterns.
