When you buy fabric! How much do you buy? (Enjoy!)

I like to buy at least 1 yd. Hardly ever buy FQ's, I don't seem to use them much. I've never bought any of the other special cuts. Recently bought about 50 yds. of the $1.50 WM fabric (different colors) to use as backs (it's so soft). If I have something special in mind, then I'll get at least 3-5 yds.

If I am buying for a specific project, then I buy what the pattern says. If it is an impulse buy, most of mine are, then usually 3 yards. This week I found a really nice Marcus Bros purple pattern that looks like blueberries sort of, on the clearance table. I bought the whole bolt, 8 yards, at $3 a yard!

I would much prefer to have no stash and to buy what I need for each project. A stash presents a storage problem for me. My experience is that what I have is either not quite enough, wrong shade, or sometimes too big a piece that I hesitate to cut into it. Also, my taste changes and what I thought was gorgeous today, I may wonder "What was I thinking" next year. There is no way not to have a stash because we always buy too much when starting a project for fear of running short.

I buy 2 yds. at a time and only buy sale fabrics. I have my stash in open view and easily accessable. I check out what colour groups are low and buy those colours that need restocking. Sale charm packs I keep on hand for my DGD to sew together and keep her occupied when she joins me in the sewing room.

When I first started quilting I started with FQTs - now I buy 2-3 yards. When buying for a specific pattern I usually buy extra - I'm always afraid I'm going to run out, especially if I make an error in the cutting. That's been known to happen a time or two!

I've only bought FQs once or twice-not enough fabric to do anything with for me.
I usually buy 1-3 yds (depending on how loud the fabric calls to me LOL) and try to add to my stash what colors I'm lacking. I have a small stash but try to keep it varied.
I recently ordered from ConnectingThreads and they had a quilt kit on sale for $17.00. I liked the fabrics but not the pattern and there was lots of fabric in it-worked out to about $2.50/yard.
I run into probems with backings and usually run out to get fabric for that after I finish the quilt. Have to watch for sales on backing fabrics.

If just purchasing fabric because I like it, I get 3 yards. If I have a project in mind, I get the required yardage, plus 3 yards (just because). I have purchased fat quarters if I need just a bit more variety for a project. I have never purchased charm packs, jelly rolls, just can't justify the expense. I did get a 10 inch collection of some landscape and building material fabrics to use for applique.
