When you buy fabric, how much do you consider to be "a lot"?

Well, I went to a sale yesterday. It was a fabric "closeout" store that I had not visited lately. They have home decor fabric and yucky knits and some quilting fabric. Unfortunately, they had been closing out the cottons. I talked to the owner about the problems quilt stores are having staying in business. He told me he sold 1,000 yards of cotton to a lady who makes children's clothes.
No matter how many yards I buy, it won't come close to that. I'm just a piker.
Can you imagine? 1,000 yards?

Fat quarters of real specialty fabric that is expensive - such as prints that are specific to a region when I travel. Otherwise, I buy at least a meter unless I'm buying for a certain pattern in which case I buy what is needed to make the pattern.

My two quilting friends and I go to Marshall's and buy 15 yard bolts to share 5 yards. We buy about 5 - 6 bolts each. That is a lot to many. We each buy a bolt of wide backing too to share with each other. That usually tides us over for about six months. Our monthly trip to Marshall's is just for the fun of it and we may buy a few yards of fabric then.
