When you use white background what kind of material do you use?

I generally don't use white very often. Too bright or too harsh. I prefer an off white (softer look). If I do use white it is a tone on tone. The only solid color I use is black or navy. My LQS has a sale on solids and I got some black and navy, the QS owner pointed out the sale and asked what other colors I needed. I told her that I don't use them I prefer blenders and marbles.
