It's a beautiful quilt. I am not very good at Stitch in the Ditch even with one of those feet that has the flange in the center. So I tend not to do that. I'm sure you will pick something that will complement your piecing.

Adding my two cents to the pack. Such pretty colors and nice work. Harriet Hargrave is an expert on using a DSM for quilting. She says to anchor the sandwich up and down and side to side like a cross. Or in your case like an X from corner to corner. If you don't want the anchoring stitches to stay you can use a wash away thread. I would only use it in either the top or bobbin, not both. It is a little pricey and when one line washes away the other one comes right off too. H H has several books and you may be able to find them in your library.

I think it is Angela Walters that has some simple videos you could get some ideas from on youtube. This is what I see: Do some straight lines 1/4'' apart on the white x's on the X blocks, and a dresden plate outline with straight lines to the square in the middle or just cross lines in middle on the O blocks. (Do dresden with scalloped ends, to look like a flower.) Loop de loo's for butterfly flight path? Or a different color (large quilting pattern) for flight path across quilt. You could do that with a big hand stitch for a few squares. Beautiful quilt!

Your quilt is beautiful. What a great way to emphasize the beautiful butterfly. I like IrishRose's idea. My suggestion for auditioning the idea on your quilt is to use a large sheet of plexiglass and a dry erase marker. I prepare my plexiglass by running masking tape around all 4 sides to create a border, (so the marker doesn't 'fall off the edge onto my quilt) I can lay the plexiglass right on top of my quilt and practice quilting designs and see how it will look and work out the best continuous line for fewer starts and stops. I take pictures of each idea I like with my phone, so i can go back and choose after I've auditioned several ideas.

I think the sashing is narrow enough that you don't need anything on those strips but I'd stitch in the ditch on either side of it to stabilize the block. Then I'd stitch 1/4" on either side of the wider white and a curving design on the wider white strips. Echo the butterfly. What a great addition to this quilt to have the butterfly as it is! And I love your colors.

That is a really pretty top. Congratulations!
Are you an experienced Free Motion Quilter? Or are you going to quilt it by hand?
If you don't have much experience FMQing, I suggest you do something pretty simple so you don't get discouraged if it is too nerve-wracking. You don't have to stitch in the ditch unless you want to.
If you are asking "should I quilt all along the perimeter before I quilt the center?" I would say not to. You might lock in any puffy areas or pleats that could be smoothed out as you go, otherwise. Good luck, and be sure to practice on something less important, before you tackle that lovely top.
