The book that made the most difference to me when I was learning to quilt was Rotary Magic. I still have a long way to go, but I can make a nice quilt. This book really explained stuff I didn't understand at first.

Quilt with a master
I highly recommend that you take a quilt class at a local (within your driving limits) quilt shop. I started with a master quilter who required we purchase a book with about 12 patterns. She chose blocks that required specific techniques, demonstrated, and guided our practice We did "homework" and returned to show her our work which she gently critiqued. She not only taught us the "how" but also the "why" and a bit of quilt history on the side. she had her personal collection of mantras such as "iron to the dark side" and "measure twice, cut once". When we completed enough blocks, she taught us how to put them together, add sashings and biindings, and quilt.
