Every now and then I try the spray again. And then I remember again why I dont' like it. I find it doesnt' always hold the layers as well as pins...especially on a larger project. I just finished unsewing several rows of quilting because of shifting. :( I will pin it to re-quilt.

I DO use basting spray, and have never had any problems such as those mentioned here. Curious. I've basted up to a 72" square quilt before and of course many smaller than that. I know I don't over spray, because the can lasts so long and doesn't gunk up my machine needles. I've mostly used June Tailor, which tends to stay put MUCH longer than the 505. I don't remember if it was the 505 or another kind, but on the back of the can, it actually stated that it was a temporary adhesive that would only last 3-5 days. My June Tailor has lasted for 5 MONTHS before. At least that's the longest time I've been between spray basting and doing the machine quilting. No affiliation, just one happy customer.

    Great thread!

I have never had any problems with it. It does wash out easily and I have had no ill effects on my fabrics. Try a small project though. I have not used it on large quilts.[/quote]

Hmm, that is indeed interesting. Thanks for sharing your experiences with me. Much appreciated. :)

    Happy starching!

I don't use it because I just don't want to pay for it. I prefer thread basting myself. I'm in the minority around here, I think. I don't like pinning because I usually meander quilt and the pins are always where I end up!

I LOVE spray basting. I've used several kinds, but I like 505 best because you can use it inside without having to ventilate the room. Remember that it IS temporary. I usually pin the edges - not because I've had a problem - I just do it because I don't want the edge to catch on something and peel back.

WHAT?!  Really?! I remember that stuff; it was bullet proof! And, it's still available, huh? How do you know it is safe for your fabrics and sewing machine? Does it wash out completely? Inquiring minds would like to know. Thanks so much. Look forward to being enlightened. :)

I have the same questions. And, oh yes, I do remember Aqua Net. Yuk. The girls in my English came up after PE and had just sprayed their buffont hairdos. I was newly pregnant and that odor is still with me. :XD:

I use basting spray on my quilts on my frame (I have HQ16) for the borders . I don't pin them in place.. can't quite figure out what the point of pinning when you have to take them out to stitch...??... so I just spray the border down... it works fine... If I'm turning a quilt to do side borders I do a basting stitch for the draw in...again pinning doesn't work for me

Depending on the size I am making, I'll use basting spray IF I have any. It's hard to find things here and some companies won't ship it. Ben Franklin carries it once in a while, but they are always out when I go there.
